Gambia defeats defending champs Liberia 4-1 in Sunday's final The Scorpions of The Gambia (Minnesota team) played the defending Champions, Liberia's Lone Stars in the second annual Minnesota African Soccer Tournament organized by African Vision 360, Africanvision360.org on August 15th, 2009.
The Gambia defeated Liberia by 4 goals to 1 (4-1). The Gambia scored Liberia 3-1 by the end of the first half. Other countries that participated in this year's tourney are: Liberia (2008 Champions), The Gambia (2008 Runners-up), Guinea, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, and Ghana. Under the capable leadership of Coach Sulayman (Sol) Njie, assistant coach Abdoulie Bojang and Team Captain Ebrima (Saul) Janneh, Best sportsmanship went to The Black Stars of Ghana, whilst Gambia's Lamin B Sambou (BIGA), who scored two goals, lifted the trophy for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Assistant coach Abdoulie Bojang thanked the entire Gambian community for the support. He said the team trained for four months leading to the tournament under the strong leadership of Coach Sulayman Njie. He also thanked the Gambian Association in Minnesota for providing financial support to the team. Kemo Camara, President & Chairman and the Public Relation Officer stressed that “African Vision 360 makes a vital impact on our community by not only educating the Minnesotans and the media about Africa's many diverse cultures, but also shows how we can come together as one continent” This tournament celebrates African culture by highlighting its many contributions to the world, both past and present. Minnesota African Cup is a, once in a lifetime historical event, where countries and cultures come together to celebrate life through the common language of soccer.
African communities turned out in large numbers to support their teams marked by African cuisines, traditional dances, and live music.
