GENERAL OPERATIONS
Geared towards the daily operations of the association.
HIV/AIDS EDUCATION & ADVOCACY
There is still a culture of silence surrounding HIV/AIDS in our community which needs to be overcome. Education and prevention are our primary goals, followed by early intervention and support. This is achieved through partnering with Aids Task Force located at Sabathani Community Center and in collaboration of sister organizations in The Gambia.
ADULT LITERACY ACTION
Helping adults improve their literacy skills has a direct and measurable impact on their families. Learning to speak, read, and write in the English language is the most important integration challenge that faces some immigrants in our community. Immigrants need English language skills to function effectively in three core roles – as leaders and caretakers of their families, as members of their communities, and as workers.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & PREVENTION
Domestic violence should not happen to anybody. Ever, period!! But it does- and when it does, there is help at Gambian Association Resource Center. Children who witness domestic violence display the same emotional responses as children who have been physically and emotionally abused. As a nation, we face the challenge of developing enhanced service interventions and community action strategies that will work to provide safety and security for all family members and prevent the problems of child abuse and violence against women from occurring.
CULTURAL EDUCATION
We encourage kids to view culturally inherent differences as building blocks rather than barriers and offer challenging opportunities to explore and grow academically and socially.
CITIZENSHIP AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Us citizenship which is attained through the naturalization process, brings many benefits to immigrants and to the United States. Naturalization allows immigrants to participate fully in the civic life of the country, and is a powerful symbolic gesture of commitment to the United States. While citizenship rates are rising, many eligible immigrants have not applied. Many of those who have not applied are low income, do not speak English well, or have low levels of education.
